about

Place: - Air Texture’s regional nonprofit series focused on local environmental causes, features Tunisia for its next in the series curated by Azu Tiwaline and Shinigami San.

As old veterans of electronic deep explorations they are driven by the aim to provide a general view and an état des lieux of the electronic microcosm of this scene supporting its different directions and creative aspects. This compilation is an invitation to have a deep dig into electronic Tunisia.

The artists curated to participate represent different backgrounds and musical perspectives. From score composers to established producers, crossing the path of more experimental ones the curators offer a large view of the ensemble of the different electronic approaches in Tunisia. Different generations are also meeting through this compilation, regrouping almost four decades of producers and sonic creators.

Supporting Organization

As with prior Place: releases, all proceeds will go to a local environmental organization with both artists contributing their music and Air Texture donating its time and resources. For this release, the recipient organization is La Ruche, based in South Tunisia, Tozeur. La Ruche supports local human rights, women rights, and environmental protection, things that are deeply linked and typically inseparable issues.

Azu Tiwaline

Nothing happens overnight. Behind every emergence, there’s years of work, thought and preparation - both intentional and unconscious - that’s gone unseen. “A new name for a new spirit”, is how Azu Tiwaline introduced herself to the world in 2020. But really, it was a project with its roots in over two decades of experimentation, soul-searching - both creative and personal - and exploration. It fuses together two halves of her own identity, inspired by her home in the desert. Personal history collides with heritage: half step rhythms from a career in bass music met the warm winds and wide open silence of El Djerid in Tunisia. When music is sincere and honest, it tends to reverberate more widely, and deeply. Her debut LP Draw Me A Silence - released by her ‘family’ at I.O.T. - and her heralded Magnetic Service EP for Livity Sound clearly resonated with listeners in 2020. Something about the spacious, yet dense sonics spoke to an audience starved of both the community of the dancefloor and the space of the outside world. Magnetic Service was one of the most acclaimed debut EPs of the year, featuring in end of year coverage from Bandcamp to Resident Advisor. What comes next is as yet unwritten. In the meantime, take inspiration from her music: keep the tempo steady, let some light in, and listen for the silence.

Shinigami San

Long time activist of the electronic music microcosm and based between Paris and Tunis, Shinigami San is a multi disciplinary artist and PhD in film studies focusing on Virtual Reality Cinema. Continuously crossing genres, from sonic experimentations to more danceable music and crossing arts mediums from video to sound and A/V installations, his aim is to converge Sound, Visual and Space through different mediums.
